I make a clear point of not picturing anything in particular.
Let’s use this colour today, or combine this material with this drawing. That’s how it all starts.
I try to visualise the image I have in my head, but there’s still a gap between me and the canvas, and it’s difficult to make a connection. I paint over the images, erase them and then draw them again, and gradually they become part of me.When I repeat the process in the stillness of the day, the presence I am meant to paint emerges by chance, and my hand picks up the rhythm and paints it allin one go. When the work looks back at me, a sense of presence and a relationship between myself and the work emerge, and then it is complete.
My work is difficult to put into words.
I sense a quiet but definite life force in the process of a flower wilting. I find the sense of loneliness and emptiness that living beings must contend with to be very human and endearing. Not in a negative sense, but by embracing that loneliness and expressing the contentment that lies within it, I try to create moments of tranquillity and simplicity that simply exist in today’s rapidly changing, material world.
When things are in motion, it is difficult to stop them, and when they are at a standstill, it is difficult to set them in motion.
I jumble up the contradictions within me and sketch them out.
My creative process is unclear and anything but free.
I don’t want to create something simple or easily understood.
I look for ways to express myself differently, and together with the materials, I give form to"what I really want"and "what is there".
